Letter to Voters Minimize

Hello and welcome to my official campaign website!

This is an exciting time for me, as the experiences I’ve had in my life as a physician will uniquely qualify me to become an effective problem-solver in the State Legislature. Yes, medicine is all about overcoming a great variety of challenges in the best, most effective way possible. I’ve been trained to think and act in this matter, and am confident I can take a similar, innovative approach, to addressing the many problems we face in our state.

For example, I’ve seen and experienced deficiencies in our health care system and I am committed to finding a way to provide health care access for every citizen. This is not just the right thing to do; it’s the smart thing, too. When patients lack basic care, they tend to let problems fester until they are more difficult to treat and more costly. Well, guess what? Taxpayers are the ones who end up picking up those costs, in the emergency room and elsewhere in our health care system. We can do better.

With gasoline prices hovering at four dollars per gallon and job cuts being announced more frequently, state leaders have a responsibility to keep the taxation burden reasonable and consider more creative ideas for job creation. We can do better.

Give me the opportunity to work on these and other issues facing our district and state, and I promise you I will do my level best to work collegially with any and all members of the legislature similarly committed to actually getting something done.

Best wishes,

Tom Luetzow
Candidate for State Assembly

Patient-Centered "Medical Home" Needed Minimize

Finding Our Way “Home”
By Tom Luetzow, MD

As a physician who’s spent many years practicing both in an emergency room and at a family medicine clinic, I have realized that many patients receive costly and less effective care than they should. What am I talking about? Our healthcare system often delivers fragmented care. Doctor Peter does not know what Dr. Paul has done for Mrs. Smith’s care. And Mrs. Smith herself is unsure. This can lead to unnecessary, repeated exams and testing that are wasting money and other resources.
The fact is some patients see multiple doctors for multiple conditions and their care is not coordinated. The evidence shows that patients with a “medical home” receive more efficient and higher quality care. The North Carolina Pilot Medicaid project has saved millions of dollars while improving quality and patient satisfaction. Minnesota has just passed legislation focused on the concept of a “medical home.”
The Patient Centered Medical Home is a care concept sponsored by the American Academies of Family Practice, Pediatrics and Internal Medicine. The central concept is for all patients to have a primary care physician.
An example of cost savings is demonstrated by comparing the cost per Medicare patient in Florida versus Wisconsin. Wisconsin is ranked second in the nation for quality of care yet spends one-third to one-half as much per recipient as Florida. This can be explained mostly because Wisconsin has a much stronger primary care network and Florida has more of a specialty focus.
By investing in the Patient Centered Medical Home, Wisconsin could save millions o dollars while improving quality and satisfaction. The Wisconsin Legislature needs to pass enabling laws to promote the Patient Centered Medical Home, and I'm going to do my best to make sure this happens.

Tom Luetzow, MD, a candidate for the 37th State Assembly district, practices family medicine and urgent care.
